Beware of scammers!

In most universities the next semester is about to begin and if you have decided to study abroad you are going to face the most difficult challenge ever: finding an accomodation.

I was an Erasmus student in Tallinn and there you have mainly two possibilities:

  1. you can apply for a dormitory (Karu dormitory is the best one: you share the room with another person and you live in a modern and cosy apartment with other 7 people for just 150 euros per month all included; Teko dormitory is very cheap as well, but you have to share kitchen and bathroom with your floor, which means about 60 people; Gs4 dormitory is very good but it is quite far from the city centre)
  2. you can look for a private apartment

Whether you are going to study in Tallinn or in another european city, if you choose the second option there are several Facebook groups where people post their offers (this is the way I found Casa, my apartment in Tallinn), but you have to consider that there is a risk: scammers.

Fortunately, I can give you some useful tips in order to avoid being scammed:

  1. always check the profile of the householder: if they’re scammers they usually don’t have friends or pictures about themselves
  2. always check Facebook groups of other university towns: if a specific person is renting the same apartment both in London and Barcellona, it is probably a scam
  3. Never pay deposit fee in advance and always check in person if the apartment exists for real: honest people will wait for your arrival before asking you money
